Diamond Lake Snowshoe Solo
This was the perfect location to choose for a solo snowshoe adventure as this pandemic was starting to unfold. Just me, the snow bunnies (seen in the video), and lots of snow to trek through. I started at the sno-park parking area outside of Salmon La Sac campground at 5:30am and got back at 4:35pm. Never saw a single person the entire day! 13.6 miles and 3450 feet elevation gain with plenty of stops for photo ops.
This destination was a snow covered lake tucked down in the trees with no view of all the stunning surrounding mountains, but the process of getting there was simply amazing.
The more adventures I go on the more I realize that it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey there.
This is true to different degrees on different hikes, but even on a destination heavy trek if you don't enjoy the journey to get there then was it really a successful venture? Did the experience build a desire to continue to the next challenge?
I think this thought somehow applies to life too… still figuring that part. 😂
Sometimes I imagine being a cameraman for someone like Bear Grylls, for an Antarctic expedition team, or a Mount Denali climbing guide. Those are all pretty lofty thoughts that may only ever happen in my imagination, but why not start on a smaller scale, better myself, and see where it takes me?
Someone recently asked me: “Why the tall mountains?”…
When I ask myself ‘Why the mountains? Why not a glass of wine, fine dining and netflix series?’
My answer is “The mountains challenge me to be my best. The mountains remind me that everyday starts and ends with beauty. And simplest yet, the mountains are where I would like to be.”
